Background

Elevating a traditional, local spirit into exportable, elegant liqueur

Mampoer is the fruitier alternative to South African Witblits, and is made from peach, apricot, litchi and other available fruits. It is said to be named after the Pedi Chief Mampuru, and is traditionally consumed South Africa.

Objectives

Our client saw the opportunity to make this very traditional “homemade” liqueur mainstream by refining the taste into a lighter, easier-drinking liqueur, delivered in 4 delicious flavour combinations. Our task was to create branding and packaging that would turns heads at South Africa’s duty-free stores at the international airports around the country.

Approach

Authenticity was a key factor in this project – we wanted to deliver a brand that conjured up the landscapes of the Free State, and the feeling of sitting on a stoep, watching a storm raging, while you sip away at a glass of mampoer. It all started with the name, Thunder & Rust, that evokes visuals of the dusty, warm and windy electrical storms raging across the South African Free State, and the familiar creak of windmills in the wind. We commissioned an illustration to deliver this exact scene, and then elevated the design using foiled metallic areas, soft touch matt lamination, and a specially placed spot gloss varnish. Both the cannister and the labels on this project won a gold and silver GAAP digital print awards.
